I realize you offered your data as "help" and not as "proof". I did not mean to imply that it was unappreciated. I am familiar with the Arvord Abernathy books and saw a lot of the "family data" that he utilized for my partiular line many years ago, beforehe wrotehis books.(He is not the only person who has been researching many years) I have nothing against Mr. Abernathy's books, but think he is more of a data collector than a data reseacher. And where the line of John Abernathy and his children is concerned, I think some of his data is patently in error.
I know that the lines of Abernathys who went from NC to Giles CO TN (where some of Frederick's descendants went) had many intermarriages with the Harwell family. But,in having contacted and been contacted by so many fellow Abernathy researchers, I have rarely run across ONE that even QUESTIONED the "fact" that Mary, the wife of Robert Abernathy, WAS A HARWELL and the daughter of MILES HARWELL, just like they never question the "fact" that the Susannah who married John "the FIddler" Abernathy was SUSANNAH HARWELL, parents unknown.Itmakes much more sense that she was possibly a Clayton. And yes, I do alsoknow that the name CLAYTON appears in other branches of the Abernathy family. Some researchers believe that there were possibly other Abernathy/ CLayton marriages, at least one has been proven by a Clayton will which names and Abernathy son in law. SO thanks for your help and sorry my reply made you feel as though you had to get defensive. That wasn't my aim at all.
These two suppositions, like the name BERRYMAN for John's son BERRY, have been handed down thru "the ages"andeveryone who looks on an Internet Familytreemaker site copies them down and passes them on to others, and all are totally without proof.
I have colleted many many original source documents related to Berry Abernathy. He was NEVER called BERRYMAN. He never referredto himself as BERRYMAN. Yet, due toasingle paragraph sent to ELizabeth Denty and published in her Abernathy column, he became BERRYMAN forevermore.
And yes, there were HOWELLS and HARWELLSin BrunswickCo VA and Lincoln CO NCwhenthe Abernathys were there, but the "proof" offered just about 100% of the time that Mary, wife of Robert Abernathy, was a Harwell and the daughter of Miles Harwell is that Miles was a very near neighbor ofthe family, and the name Miles "never shows up in the ABernathy line family after their marriage"...ergo, Mary was a Harwell and Miles was her father. Since no real proof like a will, other court, deed of gift, bible, etc record has ever been produced, I don't accept Miles Harwell OR Miles Howell.
