I recently asked a fellow researcher what was her source for the full name of the Harwell daughter she showed asmarried to Robert Abernathy. I had seen her listed as Abigail in many instances, but rarely by double given names. She was born mid-1700's in the American Colonies, a time when a vast majority of ethnic English (men or women) of all classes save royalty and the aristocracy had only one given name.
I tracked down the source: it was in typescript notes entitled "Abernethy or Abernathy family records" collected by Mrs Carl Urbahns and donated abt 1970 to the LDS church for microfilming (LDS microfilm call number 928199 item 5 or 1513612 item 3).
The orginal sentence actually read "Married Brunswick County Virginia Abigail Harwell." Careful examination of the rest of the document disclosed that Mrs Urbahns almost never mentioned a county without qualifying it by appending the name of the state in which the county existed.
The omission of the word "to" in the above quoted sentence allowed an intrepretation that her name was Virginia Abigail Harwell, which I do not believe to have been the case.
I am still left with the dilema of exactly who were the parents of Abigail's husband, since the sources so far investigated are running 6-1 in favor of David and Ann (Turner) Abernathy versus John and Lucy (Harwell?) Abernathy but the year of Robert's birth and that of David's son, David Jr. are the same. I don't think twins ran in that family at that time. And all sources so far investigated seem adamant that Robert's birth was in 1752 in either Prince George or Brunswick county VA.
If anyone has a pre-1850 source (other than David and John's wills) relating to Robert which definitively links THIS particular Robert to either set of possible parents, I'd be delighted to know about it.
