> I have the same children listed for Richard and Mary. My source is the book written by Arvord H. Abernathy.
The Gatewood manuscript was filmed by the LDS folks in 1969 while Arvord's 1994 edition (which I think is the one that you've got, right?) was filmed in '95. Arvord's sources were predominantly data submitted to him by interested individuals and Abernathy researchers of the many various Abernathy branches, including several Rockett/Abernathy lines covered in Gatewood's earlier book.
Neither Robert L. Gatewood nor Arvord M. Abernathy did any extensive citations of from whom they received the data they included. Which leaves one scrambling to try and find earlier sources, since both books are so recent and both are known to contain errors (what work of that scope doesn't have a few, eh?).
I have half a dozen sources on the Abernathys but so far only the one for the Rocketts. None of the sources is earlier than 1932, and several of them contradict each other on one thing or another. It's almost impossible to figure out what are the original resources upon which these books base their conclusions. And Arvord flatly stated that he simply accepted any family group data submitted to him and never made an effort to cross-check and/or verify any of it.
After finding several instances where his data on one page for an individual, spouse, & children did not match up with the data on another page for that same family (possibly because they were submitted by people from different branches of the same family), I created a "conflict" list of problems to resolve, but I seem to add to it much faster than I can remove completed entrys.
Well, keeps me off the streets and out of trouble, I reckon.
