My earlier reply this afternoon stated that I did not have a copy of William Short's will. I did. Stuck off in a very different directory than it should have been placed in.
It is dated the 22d day of May 1764, signed and witnessed in Brunswick Co, VA, in the St Andrews Parish. Executors to be his sons William Short, Jacob Short, and Charles Abernathy. There's a codicil dated and witnessed on the 12th October 1769, to the effect that John Burrow and his wife gets no part whatever of his estate. My database shows that John Burrow's wife was an un-named daughter of Alice Short and Charles Abernathy.
I also poked around on my disk drives a little more, and found a note about an old message on this Abernathy GenForum messagebase, dated 12 Nov 2002, posted by Janet Hunter, in which she describes a couple of Chancery Court cases which prove that Alice Short was, indeed, the daughter of William Short.
The will itself does not mention his daughters given names, only the two sons, but the court cases against the Executors of his will make their given and married names quite clear.
My apologies to all interested parties for forgetting where I stashed his will... I do hope this isn't a precursor of senility.
