Among others, I also have the will of the Robert Abernathy who died in St Clair Co, IL.
In my database, I have 4 Robert Abernathys, all of whom are said to have been born abt 1751 or 1752, death dates ranging from unknown to 1832 to 1845. I have three known sets of parents to whom one or another of these Roberts is supposidly linked (I have wills on two of them and am looking for a will for the other set). I also have different sets of children and different wives attributed to these Roberts. I would welcome a definitive sorting out of who belongs where, but fear there is still insufficient documentation at present to accomplish this.
Recent research encourages me to speculate that this particular Robert is not of the commonly known lineage that derives from the 1652 bondservant of Charles City County VA, but from a lesser well known lineage. One that I suspect may ultimately be tied into that one or be proved totally independant (at least on this side of the Atlantic). There is, after all, an entire line of Abernathys who migrated westward thru what is now West Virginia and into KY. And another which had a major branch traced into Illinois prior to 1850. How do we KNOW that these aren't a line that the St Clair Robert sprang from? I don't. Nor, I suspect, does anyone else.
I have seen it reported that the Robert of St Clair IL was born in Granville Co, NC. But I've noticed grave problems in those portions of the databases of those who so claim. Conflicts bad enough to cast more than a reasonable doubt upon the alleged facts reported.
I do not know who were the parents of the Robert Abernathy who was married to Sarah Nichols. Nor am I sure of the list of the children.
