> According to the book "Catawba County Cemeteries" volume 1 page 95, Betty J Abernathy was born January 26, 1798 > (not 1793) and died January 6, 1859.
Her marriage date is reported on p. 64 of B. C. Holtzclaw's "Asbury of Westmoreland County, VA" as 14 Oct 1808. The above birth year, if correct, would put her age at 11 years 6 months and 14 or 15 days old on the day of her marriage, which is highly uncommon, even for a frontier area in a time when girls married younger than today. Per census records, her eldest daughter was born in 1810 possibly late 1809.
Since I've run into many instances where typo errors have been made in the tedious process that begins with transcribing from tombstones (especially well worn ones) and ends in a printed page, I am inclined to err on the side of sensibility and assume that she (with a Father who was a Minister of the Gospel!) was at _least_ 15 yrs old when she married.
So please do forgive my skepticism and caution, but until I can personally go to that cemetery and inspect the tombstone to verify that the "Catawba County Cemeteries" book is, in fact, in error in this instance, I think I'll stick with what I believe to be the far more logical year, volumn 1 and page 95 notwithstanding.
