> Thomas S. Abernathy, a Methodist minister, was born March 26, 1803 in Brunswick County, VA
I have a different birth date for Thomas Smith Abernethy, Methodist Minister, which I believe I got off a website that had listings for the major Cemeteries in Marengo County AL, including the Dayton Cemetery where Thomas is buried. That website may not now be active but I believe a new listing of that cemetery can now be found at
> James C. Abernathy was born September 6, 1835 in Old Spring Hill, Marengo County.
Dr. J. C. Abernethy was a surgeon with the 32 Alabama Infantry. He is listed only by initials on the 1850 census.
I have him in my database as Jones Cadwallader Abernethy, physician. Source: a privately published booklet by Thomas Perkins Abernethy (grandson of Thomas Smith Abernethy Jr. who was a brother of Dr. Jones C. Abernethy) entitled "The Antecedents of the Abernethy Family in Scotland, Virginia and Alabama", p. 17, available on microfilm from the LDS Family History Library. It contains a few interesting gaps (he omits a couple of the senior Thomas Smith Abernethy's sons, and most, if not all, of the daughters), but is better than many such booklets. Thomas Perkins Abernethy was also careful not to state as fact his postulates and opinions concerning the origin of the first Robert, but instead to document them rather thoroughly.
