Looking for additional evidence regarding the David Abernathy (son of James Abernathy & Elizabeth Cox) who married his 3rd cousin Martha/Patty Abernathy (daughter of David Abernathy Sr & Anne Turner). As they were 3rd cousins, this requires that David's father descends from the 1st Robert of Charles City County, VA, but no documentary evidence to prove this is presently known.
Rozella Abernathy's notes in 1934 list children as Nancy who md John Capps 2 Dec 1811 in NC, Joshua who moved to Mo, and James who supposidly md Murat Young. No data exists on James & Murat Young, and Rozella's data in that work is known to have errors and is therefore suspect.
Arvord M. Abernathy's 1994 work also reports (p 60) three children by David: Joshua, James, and Nancy. His work also cites no sources, b/death dates nor other specifics, and is known to have errors.
Early Fite data as included in Birdie Abernathy Jamison's notes donated to the LDS for filming by Marguerite Sanders of Senatobia MS also list James, Joshau, and Nancy as children. The Fite charts are very difficult to decipher, and also contain errors and/or omissions.
David made his will on 18 Jun 1795 and died soon after although we have no probate date, but alas his will was not at all informative, yielding only the name of his eldest son. He may have been a Tory during the war, or he may have acquired a gun manufactured in England in 1770 off some poor British Soldier. The gun was bequeathed to his eldest son, James who passed it on to his son, Sidney.
Descendants of various individuals from Missouri who _might_ be David & Martha's children, have family history containing certain clues that are highly suggestive regarding their ancestors, and these yielded the names of children James, Clara, David, Martha, Sally, Joshua, Turner, Grief, and Mary.
There is evidence that James & Joshua moved to Mo and there married daughters of Jones Abernathy & Elizabeth Rutledge and left issue.
There is solid evidence that Turner stood surety in 1813 for the NC marriage bond between James Rockett & Elizabeth Bandy but by 1814 he was in St Genevive County Missouri where he is listed as a single man over 21 on an early St Genevive County tax record. He is also found on Jury duty records in St Genevive County (along with his father-in-law) until abt 1824. Turner apparently married in St Genevieve County MO but soon moved across the River to Washington County IL where he died abt 1840, leaving widow & 7 children.
Sarah "Sally" Conrad is known to have married Peter Rudolph Conrad in 1810 and both are buried in Missouri, where they left at least 7 children and many grandchildren.
Grief apparently remained in NC until 1824 when he stood surety for the marriage bond of a cousin, Alfred Abernathy, to Magdalene Friday. No record of his marriage nor issue has yet been found, and he then seems to disappear from the public records.
A Mary Abernathy married John S. Shuford in Lincoln County NC in 1822 and the couple evidently moved to Perry County MO between 1830 & 1840; they are on the 1850 Perry County Census. Cannot yet positively tie this Mary to David & Martha.
Tax lists yield:
1814, St Genevieve Co, MO: Turner Abernathy
1824, Perry Co, MO: James Abernathy
1828, Perry Co, MO: Joshua Abernathy

Of David & Patti's un-named children indicated on the census records (_SIX_ sons under aged 10 in 1800?!?) there is no evidence as yet, either in NC, in Missouri, or from possible temporary resting stops along the way.
Soliciting information: certain descendants in Oregon, California, Missouri and elsewhere are anxious for solid evidence to prove a paper trail of their descent from the 1st Robert.
