Does anyone have actual records for Frederick which are abstracted below?
Frederick Abernathy W/W 19 Dec 1816 W/P May 1819 (Abstract) Source: Photostat pp. 49-50, Brunswick Co., VA Will Bk 9, 1818-24 Frederick Abernathy of Brunswick Co. lends to wife, Millie during her widowhood, or life, the tract of land. to son: Matthew Abernathy after the death of Millie. to dau: Sandal to dau: Mason To my children I had by my first wife, one dollar each.I give the remainder, after death of my wife, Millie, to Matthew & Mason. Wit: John Sadler Frederick X Abernathy Lewis Connelly Wm. Gee Proved at May Term of Court 1819 with Lewis Connelly and John Scoggins as security for Matthew Abernathy as Executor Inventory filed 3 Jun 1819, recorded on page 50, approved in Ct 28 June 1819
The abstract seems to imply that only Matthew and Mason were children of Millie (Davenport, second wife) since they were the ones to get the remainder. Some have shown Sandal, Matthew, and Mason as children by Frederick's first wife, Tabitha Harwell, and others, including Elizabeth Denty Abernathy in "The Abernathy Family" show all three by second wife, Millie Davenport.Sandal could not have been by Millie because she was born in 1789 (tombstone)and Millie and Frederick were married 11 Feb 1795.
The mother of Matthew is the one that is uncertain. The only source I have found that provides a basis for estimating his birth date is the 1850 census, which shows him as 56 and would place is birth date ca 1794.However, for Tabitha to have been his mother in 1794, for her to have died, and for Frederick to have married Millie Davenport in Feb 1795, makes me wonder if Matthew was actually born in 1795 and son of Millie. It is possible that Tabitha died in child birth with Matthew in 1794. She was apparently alive in 1792 because she is mentioned in her father's will. Dispostion of the property she received may give the names of her children, if it exists and can be found. If anyone knows more on this I would also appreciate hearing about it.
From the wording of the above abstract, the closeness of Millie's marriage and Matthew's birth date, leads me to think that the census may be in error and that Matthew was born in 1795 as child of Millie.
If anyone has anything that would help prove which wife of Frederick was the mother of Matthew I would appreciate it. Thanks.John
