Our Abernethy/Abernathy Y-DNA surname project is going reasonably well, all things considering. We now have almost 50 volunteers (including a few that aren't yet posted to the websites.
We have two distinct groups (one with roots in Ireland, one with roots in Scotland) which probably diverged from one another well prior to 5,000 BC (or so say some much more knowledgable than I) and have a potential for up to 4 more, if we can ever find and fund tests on living individuals who match those 4 unique individuals.
We still don't have any definitive evidence that the William Abernethy of CT who was married to Sarah Doolittle was more closely related to our Robert of VA than perhaps 3rd or 4th cousin. We do have evidence that several of the Virginia Branches which were previously postulated to be related are in fact _very_ closely related, descendants of some of them being perfect matches with many who have inpecable paper trails back to Robert. And we also have shown that the Abernathys who descend from a certain William Abernathy who left a will in 1780 in Frederick County VA was clearly not related to the Abernathys of colonial New England nor to the other colonial Virginia Abernathys nearer the Atlantic shores. And we have evidence that suggests that the Abernethys of Newberry County SC may not be related to any of the above Abernethy Branches, either. It's getting very interesting.
As you recall, I found your DNA results on SMFG's database. But I've been wondering ever since. If it's not too personal a question, what month/year did you get your results back and from what test service?
