Ross: I am a descendent of an Irish John Abernethy b. circa 1775 in Antrim. I was born in Papakura in 1930 and now live in Boston. I've had my Y-DNA tested. There seem to be two main groups with this surname or variant of: those whose ancestor was Irish and those with a Scots ancestor. There is at least one family in NZ with an Abernethy ancestor from the Shetlands (there are also many Abernethys in the Orkneys). It would be of great interest to see if these Abernethys belonged to the Irish or Scottish group or are in a separate group altogether. If you know of any Kiwi Abernethys, especially those of the Shetland persuasion who would like their Y-DNA tested let me know. I would like to steer them and their data to the Abernethy surname group to which I belong.
