Trying to determine the final resting place of Mary Ellen (ABNEY) NEWSOME (27 JAN 1837 AL-19 SEP 1863 prob. Muscogee Co, GA) and her children.Mary Ellen was the first wife of Henry M. NEWSOME (1836 Harris Co, GA-1899 Carroll Co, GA), whom she married 16 DEC 1855 in Muscogee Co, GA.Their children were:
> Catherine Lewcina NEWSOM (28 MAY 1857-04 MAY 1857)
> Charles NEWSOM (b. 1858 GA, per 1860 census; he does not appear in Bible records)
> Martha An Elizabeth NEWSOM (24 JUL 1859-05 APR 1871)
> Clara Tabitha NEWSOM (11 DEC 1861-30 JAN 1863)
> unnamed NEWSOM (b. 16 SEP 1863 - no further record)
Mary Ellen evidently died of complications from childbirth with her fifth child.Because the family were in Muscogee Co, GA on the 1860 census and Henry M. NEWSOME married there in 1864 (to Permelia PAGE), it is probable that Mary Ellen and her children died there. In 1869, Henry had a daughter born at Clapp's Factory, so it is possible that he was living at the Clapp Village when Mary Ellen and her children died. Were they buried in Clapp's Cemetery?Permelia PAGE's brother died in 1862 while serving in the CSA and was buried in Clapp's.The earliest burial there that we know of was in 1856.
Mary Ellen is a daughter of Absolom P. & Rosannah (HALL) ABNEY, whose other children include Mary Elizabeth ABNEY (m. 1856 Muscogee Co, GA to John DAVIDSON) and Elvira ABNEY (m. 1858 Muscogee Co, GA to Robert STATHAM), who was mother-in-law to Henry M. NEWSOME's great-nephewJoseph Fletcher NEWSOME.I am interested in finding out if anyone among this ABNEY family or their kin is believed to be buried at Clapp's Cemetery.None of the graves are now marked, and there is an effort to restore the cemetery.Any input will be appreciated.John Mallory Land
