Hi! My full name is Dona Janelle Abnot, now Curnutte. I am the daughter of Albert Kenneth Abnot (one of seven children). I believe Francis Marion Abnot was my fathers Grandfather. I'm trying to compile more information myself, although people on Dad's side don't talk about their family much. Also, when you ask them questions, you typically get a yes or no answer, no elaboration. I need sit my father down and his six sisters to get more information. Also, you might contact Fred McKenzie at email@example.com. He came to our family reunion this year (June 2001) and got a lot of information that might be of interest to you.
I recently requested information from Jonette Severson at firstname.lastname@example.org whom I understand had traced the Abnot family back several generations. Here is her reply…
Jan, almost 2 years ago our house burned to the ground and we lost absolutely everything, including my 20 years of genealogical research! I can give you what I remember, which isn't a lot right now; I haven't had the heart to get back into it. This is on my father's side:
Frank Edgar Stephens (my grandfather) b. 1897 Stanley, Johnson Co. KS d. 8 Aug. 1970 Lancaster, CA. married Mamie Ellen Taylor
John Albert Stephens b. 15 Feb. 1864 Clay Co. MO d. 29 Dec. 1926 married Lela Buchanan Lela's parents: John B. Buchanan and Sarah E. Abnot. Sarah's parents were Francis Marion Abnot and Nancy McKenzie. Francis and Nancy were married ca. 1839Floyd Co. IN. They're on the 1840 Floyd Co IN Census. From this date, they're on the MO and KS censuses. In 1870 Nancy is listed by herself in the census for Johnson Co., Oxford Twp. KS. (under Abnet).
The name is sometimes spelled Abnet, which has led my on a wild goose chase! I researched that spelling for years. but never found any concrete ties, so I am still not sure if my Francis Marion Abnot is connected with the Jacob Abnet family. The Jacob Abnet family can be traced back to the 17th Century or earlier to Germany and Switzerland. Somewhere along the way I heard a tale that our Abnot line is a direct descendant of Marie Antoinette.........that her son was smuggled out of France during the Revolution by loyal servants the name changed.
I've done research on Marie Antoinette, and supposedly all the children were killed, but there is speculation that their son DID get away. Gives you the chills, doesn't it? I have been in contact with Abnots in Idaho.....it's been a few years, though. There were Abnots in Santa Cruz, CA and in Texas, although I haven't contacted any of those.
I hope this information helps. If you have anything you could sent me, I would greatly appreciate it. We are in the middle of building a house and the e-mail address at email@example.com is only valid until somewhere around October 2001. You can reply to me at firstname.lastname@example.org as an alternative until we get moved.
