I propose we look "further" into a Samuel PHILLIPS and a Keziah ABRAHAM family, of Upper Merion, Montgomery (Chester?) County, Pa. I have a feeling that THESE two are the parents of our Keziah PHILLIPS who married our James DAVIS (abt 1761-10 September, 1850)...You know, as I do, that James and Keziah are buried at Woodbridgetown Church Cemetery.
Gosh, I feel so darn good about what I'm about to tell you two...
Jane and Tony, I've been doing some digging...digging for bones. I, well with the wonderful help of some online friends, have found the Will of one Samuel PHILLIPS, of Upper Merion, Montgomery (Chester?) County, Pa.
Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834
Montgomery County, 1784-1823
PHILLIPS, Samuel- Upper Merion

To each of her children their share of 52 pounds as they come of age. To daughter, Catherine, 30 pounds and to each of her children their portional share of 42 pounds, there being seven children. To daughter, Keziah, 142 pounds. To son, Jonathan,199 acres. Remainder of estate equally divided among children.
Exec: Son, Jonathan PHILLIPS
Witnesses: James DAVIS, Jonathan TUCKER
I found that the above Samuel PHILLIPS died on 19 November, 1788, in Upper Merion, Montgomery (Chester?) County, Pa. If you'll notice the "witness" on the Will...It's James DAVIS. Also, would you like to know who sister, Leah PHILLIPS, (yes, sister to our Keziah PHILLIPS, BOTH mentioned in the Will of Samuel PHILLIPS) married??? Leah PHILLIPS married to a John STURGIS, the son of Thomas STURGIS and a Catherine ROBERTS. Leah PHILLIPS, born 7 November, 1752, in The Great Valley, Chester County, Pa., and John STURGIS, born about 1749, were married in 1772 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
I felt pretty good about finding BOTH Leah PHILLIPS "and" Keziah PHILLIPS being mentioned in the Samuel PHILLIPS Will. Add to that the fact that James DAVIS is a witness of the Will...Now, you have BOTH a Keziah PHILLIPS "AND" a James DAVIS names on a specific court document. We know from the Fayette County Land case I've talked to you before about, that our James DAVIS was in fact in the "Valley Forge area", when General Washington quartered his troops there during the Revolutionary War. James Davis was there "living with an uncle". Why would he be living with "an uncle"??? Well, the first thought that comes to my mind is that he was of age to be out and about on his own, "OR", something had happened to his parents family...Well, please read this:
..."according to Futhey& Cope...."James David/DAVIS, of Tredyffrin, purchased land there in
1711, which he conveyed to his grandson of the same name in 1741.He died
in or about 1744, leaving a daughter Margaret, wife of James Abraham, Jane
(married to Thomas James. May 15, 1722). Eleanor, unmarried, and ***some
grandchildren by a deceased son....James, David, Elizabeth, Mary.***
Eleanor Davis inherited the homestead of 100 acres and with her lived
John Thomas, whose wife, Elizabeth , was her niece, and Rachel James, the
daughter of her sister Jane.Eleanor Davis and John Thomas were murdered
and Rachel James was dangerously wounded, Aug. 1, 1752, by 3 men, two of
whom were caught and hung!"
Jane and Tony, I wish I could have underlined it! Did you see the mention of "some grandchildren by a DECEASED SON...JAMES, David, Elizabeth, and Mary"??? Now, read this, please:
DAVIS, James- Tredyffrin
27 February, 1773- Codicil 25 October, 1773Proven 30 November, 1773
Mentions settlement already made for wife, Elizabeth, during lifetime. To son, Jacob DAVIS, 50 pounds. To son, Israel DAVIS, 1 shilling. To Grandson, Methuselah DAVIS, 40 pounds. To Grandson, James DAVIS, 57 pounds at 21 years of age. To Grandson, Joseph DAVIS, 40 pounds at 21 years of age. To Grandson, Israel DAVIS, 40 pounds. To Granddaughter, Rachel, 40 pounds at 18 years of age. To Granddaughter, Leah DAVIS, 63 pounds at 18 years of age. To Grandson, Joshua DAVIS, 40 pounds at 21 years of age. To Beninah DAVIS, youngest daughter of son, Israel DAVIS, 50 pounds at 18 years of age. To Grandson, James DAVIS, plantation in Charlestown, where my son, Israel DAVIS, now lives, his father to have same until he is 21 years of age.
Exec: Joshua EVANS of Willistown, and Grandson, James DAVIS
Witnesses: David GRIFFITH, Eb. GRIFFITH, and John GRIFFITH
If our James DAVIS was born about 1761 as we have always believed then he would have been under 21 years of age in 1773, when this elder James DAVIS' Will was written. Also, the location of Tredyffrin Township, in Chester County, Pa...Valley Forge, Pa...as well as Upper Merion, Montgomery County, Pa...They are all in proximity to one another. It would have been easy for our James DAVIS to have known the Samuel and Keziah (ABRAHAM) PHILLIPS family.
Here's one last kicker...The sister of our Keziah (PHILLIPS) DAVIS, wife of our James DAVIS??? Well, she was Leah PHILLIPS. Leah PHILLIPS married to one John STURGIS. Are you aware of just where they're buried, Jane and Tony? Well, they lie not far from James and Keziah (PHILLIPS) DAVIS, in the Woodbridgetown Church Cemetery, in Fayette County, Pa.! Leah (PHILLIPS) STURGIS died there 22 August, 1827, John died there 14 February, 1822.Their children were: Mary "Polly" STURGIS; Isaac STURGIS; Phineas STURGIS; Kezia STURGIS; Catherine STURGIS; Phillips STURGIS; Leah STURGIS; Jane STURGIS; and John P. STURGIS. I think the given names, AGAIN, hint at the ancestry here..."PHILLIPS STURGIS"????
The Keziah ABRAHAM, who married Samuel PHILLIPS was a daughter of a James ABRAHAM and Margaret DAVIS, of The Great Valley, Chester County, Pa. James ABRAHAM was born about 1691 in Clodock Co., Herefordshire, Wales, the son of Morgan and Sarah ABRAHAM. James ABRAHAM married to Margaret DAVIS, the daughter of James DAVID/DAVIS, about 1715. Margaret DAVIS was born before 1704 in Radnor Township, Chester County, Pa. James ABRAHAM died about 1747, in Georges Township, Fayette County, Pa. I have the children of James and Margaret (DAVIS) ABRAHAM as:
1. Keziah ABRAHAM, born about 1716 in The Great Valley, Chester County, Pa., died 26 July, 1782, in Chester County, Pa. She, of course, married to Samuel PHILLIPS mentioned above. She and Samuel PHILLIPS are buried in the Great Valley Baptist Churchyard, in Chester County,Pa.
2. Isaac ABRAHAM, born 28 April, 1717, in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery (Chester?) County, Pa., died 25 March, 1782, in Upper Merion, Montgomery (Chester?) County, Pa. He married to Dinah HARVARD about 1750, the daughter of John HARVARD.
3. Ezekiel ABRAHAM, born about 1719, in Upper Merion, Montgomery (Chester?) County, Pa., died about 1749, in Chester County, Pa.
4. Elizabeth ABRAHAM, born about 1721, in Upper Merion, Montgomery (Chester?) County, Pa.
5. Meiriam ABRAHAM, born about 1725, in Upper Merion, Montgomery (Chester?) County, Pa. Believed to have "possibly" married a Samuel DAVIS.
I believe this ABRAHAM family to descend from Morgan ABRAHAM, of Wales, born about 1660/1665 in Caerwys, Clodock Co., and Herefordshire. It is said he left a Will, Parish, of Clodock, Herefordshire, Wales, dated 1712.
Jane and Tony, couldn't we investigate these possibilities further? I have a gut feel that this may just pan out. Bottom line is, I think our Keziah (PHILLIPS) DAVIS was a daughter of Samuel PHILLIPS and Keziah ABRAHAM. I am thinking our James DAVIS was a Grandson of old James DAVIS, of Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, Pa., who left a Will there in 1773...
