I am searching for Abt descendants that have roots in the "Volga Deutscher" Colonies established by Catherine the Great the Germanic Princess that became Tsarina of Russia in the 1760's.Among the Germans from Russia there were only two Abt households in the 1798 Census of the German Colonies along the Volga. My ancestor Johannes Abt, who arrived as a 10 year old orphan in 1767, was recorded in the Census of Brabander in 1798.Brabander was a town of only 398 people.Johannes Abt the orphan of Brabander was listed as living with a Moellker family in 1767.It is unknown at this time who his parents were and whether they had died in transit to Russia or before Johannes their son had left. The Moelker family was from Kurphalz Kecklingen.I am still unable to identify Kurphalz Kecklingen.I am assuming that it was the village of Kecklingen located in the "Phalz" or Palatinate as we describe the area in English.Johannes Abt the orphan may have originated there. Many immigrants to the United States during the 1700s also came from the Palatinate where they had survived Wars, change of leadership and loss of land tenure.I am assuming that a large portion of the inhabitants of the the 101 German Colonies along the Volga were from the Palatinate.
The descendants of Johannes Abt, the orphan of Brabander are many. They are known to be in Canada, the United States, and Argentina. If you have Abt ancestry from Russia there is a very strong probability that you relate to Johannes Abt or the other Abt household in the 1798 Census mentioned above.I have a lot of information on the descendants of Johannes Abt the orphan, who had 16 children, but there are many lines that I still can not descend downward. If you have Abt ancestry from Russia please contact me.Some of the other names on this genealogy are Bondank (my grandmother's line descending from Nikolas Bondank in the 1798 Census of Brabander), Kern, Fuhr, Rossman/Russmann, Bauer, Schwaljie, Buss, Homan, Bartell, Vogels, Schell, Sommer, Burghoff, Staldecker, Martel,Blein, Bauer,Braun,Ernst,Rach, Betz, Wett (or Weth) and Murschau. If you are a German from Russia and have any of these names in your genealogy we probably connect.Often leaving Russia for these families was under very difficult circumstances. For decades communication did not exist. The Volga Germans were scattered all over the world and knew little about those left behind or those that left previously or later.
My ancestor Johannes Abt born 1881 and his wife born 1887 came to the United States in 1907 and 1910 respectively. Johannes my grandfather was the son of Michael Abt and Catharina Kern, both born in Brabander, a Volga German Village near Saratov.Michael my great grandfather was the hson of Johannes Abt born on August 26, 1828, at Brabander and Anna Maria Fuhr from Deller Colony. The father of Johannes born in 1828 was Johann Georg Abt born March 6,1807, and Appolonia Wett (or Weth).Johann Georg was the son of Johannes Abt, the orphan of Brabander who arrived in Russia in 1767, by his first wife Anna Maria Blein. When Anna Maria Blein died Johannes Abt the orphan of Brabander married secondly to Catharina Bauer.
Hoping to hear from some Volga Deutscher Abts or allied family members.
