I am a decendant from the Achenbach's that first came to Southern Africa I guess about 6 generations ago. Our surname was changed to Agenbag to suit the Dutch-speaking community's usage of the 'ch'-pronounciation. My grandfather was born in 1907, and I share his name: James Benjamin Agenbag. The surname is not very common in South Africa, and I have always wondered about our family origin. I have since relocated to Australia, where the surname is even more unfamiliar.
We had some German Coal Processing Engineers in the office yesterday, and they told me that my family name is famous in Germany for the Achenbach Coal Wash Plant. That made me research a little, and I came across this website. I would love to find out where the link is between my family, and the German Achenbachs. Any information would be great.
