John was born, 31 Aug 1868, son of John and Magdalena (Flick) Acher. Their children were: Mary (Mrs. Rudolph Hertenstein, Napoleon, IN); Louise (Mrs. William Hulbush, Chinook, MT); Annie (Mrs. William Wiebkin, Ripley county, IN); John W. (Zurich, MT); Charles (Chinook, MT); Rudolph (Terre Haute, IN); Lena (Mrs. James Hazelrig, Napoleon, IN); Albert (Fort Dodge, IA).
John W. was bornin the vicinity of Napoleon, Ripley county, Indiana, where he spent his early years as a farmer's son and received a country school education.In 1893, he came to Chinook, MT, and worked as a ranchhand for T.C. Burns for two or three years.He then took up a homestead on the river near Zurich, MT, where he raised grain, hay, and Hereford cattle, eventually developing a ranch of 1,100 acres.
On 2 Sep 1901, Chinook MT, John Acher married Miss Marie Barnes, who came to Montana from Chicago in 1900.She was born, 4 May 1866,in Pennsylvania, daughter ofMerritt P. and Harriet (Long) Barnes, who moved to Scott county, IA, when Marie was six months old.Marie was the first born of the Barnes children: May (Mrs. Joseph Hause, Newfoundland, PA); Anna (Mrs. Harry Stewart, Princeton, IA); Blanche (Mrs. Robert Crawford, LeClaire, IA).
One son, Arthur, was born to John and Marie Acher.
