Wilbur Acker of Windham, Greene County, NY
The Windham Journal, weekly newspaper published at Windham, Greene County, New York, issue of Thursday, March 20, 1879:
Reunited - The Lost Found.
Eighteen years ago a lad about ten years old, left his parents' home in Leeds, N.Y., and turned up in a grocery store in this village. He was observed by Mr. Chiles White, (now deceased) and by him taken to his home, where the lad resided until his benefactor's death. That lad was Wilbur Acker, now living in Mitchell Hollow.
Of his parents he heard nothing, and of him his parents were also ignorant; they had, subsequently to the boy's leaving home, moved to Columbia County [NY].
Recently a peddler from Columbia County, in conversation with Wilbur Acker, heard his story, and told him that Ackers lived in his vicinity. The peddler subsequently hunted up the father, and last week the two were reunited after a separation of 18 years. The elder Acker and wife supposed their runaway boy was dead.
[Census records indicate that Wilbur was the son of DeWitt and Margaret Acker.]
