There was a Fitzgerald Kildare who was granted lands in Antrim. I wonder if he had Bally-mena (maine/mayne) then, much earlier than 1630's and was just re-granted them. Perhaps may be connected with the Fitzgerald wife, mistress of a King, who was later given the title of Countess of Castle-maine Castle-mayne. (Was it Villiers ?) Believe there was Earl Kildare of Mayne earlier. In the Reg. of the Great Seal of Scotland 1593 - 1608 (in latin) it mentions Barssollis-mylne would this be another form of Bally-mayne ? In the Reg. of the Privy Council of Scotland 1638-1643 listing people who contributed for the maintenance of the Army in Ireland it mentions (Mr. or who-ever) Balmayne. Perhaps in English it was Balmain ? The Irish/Scots/English all seemed to spell things differently, about 10 different ways. There was another mention in the above of the "Laird of Balmaine".
