There is a Thomas ADAIR, age 18, and his brother(?) living in the household of Peter and Sarah CARTER in 1850, Van Buren Co., Tennessee.I believe that the brother, listed only as H.D.C., male age 16, is my ancestor, Nelson ADAIR.It's the right age and the right place. In 1850 Peter CARTER is age 73, his wife Sarah is age 70, and (dau?) Lurany is age 30.There is another Adair family in 1850 Van Buren Co., TN: Thomas Adair age 40, Nancy age 35, Margarett 13, Sarah 11, Carter 9, Mary 7, Luraney 5, Eleanor C., 3, and Nelson age 1.They seem to be connected, but I don't know how.Does anyone have any info on how these families may have been related?
Nelson was the son of a Cherokee woman and a white man.Could H.D.C. possibly stand for an Indian name?
Nelson ADAIR married Mary Jane MCGUIRE in Bollinger Co., MO in 1857, a year after her parents bought land there. The MCGUIRE's were also from Van Buren Co., TN.Also found in Bollinger Co. in 1860 is a Thomas ADAIR, age 29, wife Elizabeth age 26, and a six-month-old daughter named Sarah. This seems likely to be the same Thomas who was 18 in Van Buren Co., TN.
Does anyone recognize Thomas and know what may have happened to him?Nelson ADAIR was killed in the Civil War although no records have been found.Only a pension application made by his widow.
Note:Van Buren Co. was formed in 1840 from Bledsoe, Warren, and White Counties. The MCGUIREs were originally in that part of White Co. that became part of Van Buren. The CARTERs and ADAIRs may have been originally in White Co. also.
