I am still searching for the parents of my GG Grandfather, James Adair. If any of this sounds familiar,I would appreciate hearing from you.
My ADAIR info came from Family Records of my Grandfather Edward Lee Adair.Until and IF we can ever find the parents of our James & William ADAIR, we won't be able to 'prove' that these boys were brothers, but we 'think' they are for this reason. James b. 03 June 1790 and William ADAIR b. 1799 were inHenry Co. GA. at the same time, in the early 1820's. The facts so far are:
James was married to Anne Smith on 14 Feb 1814 we 'think' in SC but it could have been GA.
Their 1st son, JOHN Smith ADAIR was b. 21 May 1822 in Locust Grove, Henry Co. GA.
William Adair marriedSusannah Davis Rooker d/o Rev. John Rooker of York Co. GA on 30 Dec 1823in York Co. SC.
Their lst son, JOHN Rooker ADAIR was b. 16 Oct 1824.......we 'think' this indicates that the father of James & William could have been named JOHN ADAIR since both lst sons were named John and somany of the Scotch-Irish families followed this tradition. Both James & William were in census of Henry Co. GA in 1822 and 1830.
On 13 May 1831 James 2nd son, Andrew Jackson ADAIR was born in Locust Grove, Henry Co. GA.
By 1840 William was still in census of Henry Co. GA but James was in Paulding Co. GA. census. On 13 Nov. 1841 John Smith ADAIR married Mary Ann HESLEP of Paulding Co. GA. We 'think' this can be proved because Rufus HESLEP ADAIR, their son, was b. Jan 1860 in Marshall Co. MS & Rufus’ daughter, Alma HESLEP ADAIR was b. 06 Sept in Lafayette Co. MS...........we don't think the name 'Heslep' would have continued to be used unless it was their mother's maiden name.[I say this because a descendant of the Bozeman Adair family of Paulding Co. GA also thinks their 'John Adair' married Mary Ann Heslep, butwe believeit was our John Smith ADAIR that married Mary Ann because of the continued use of the name HESLEP.]
By 1850, James, Anne, their 2 sons & the family of John were all listed in the census records of Memphis, Shelby Co. TN. James died 22 March 1851 in Shelby Co. TN. Both John Smith and Andrew Jackson ADAIR lived in Marshall Co. MS., [just south of Memphis, Shelby Co. TN.] until A.J. moved his family to TX in 1886 after the death of his wife, Frances Gant, while John Smith ADAIR’s family stayed in MS.
By 1850 we found who we 'think' to be our William in Harris Co. GA but by 1860 it seems that he is found in census of Henry Co. GA again. I've tried, unsuccessfully thus far, to find some descendant of who we 'think' is our William's family from Henry Co. GA. to see what info they might have and to see if we can prove that he was the brother to our James.
In census records our James & Anne said they were both born in SC. but I've not been successful in finding where in SC or in finding either of their families either in SC or GA. I've studied all the ADAIR Families I could find in SC [and there are many] but not been able to 'prove' we connect to any of them. There is a John Adair listed in census of 1790 & 1800 in York Co. SC but cannot prove ours connect to him or where he came from. I am now going to start a search of the N.C. area where there were also many ADAIR families. There are also many ADAIR's in TN that so far I can't connect to our family.
