In researching my ancestor, William Elwood , in the Records of Indentured Servants in Philadelphia, at a college library which appeared in the Pennsylvania German Society Proceedings volume 16I found the following entry for James Adair, Jr. indentured Oct 29, 1771 to James Roney and his assigns,Philadelphia. To be taught the cordwainer trade, read the Bible, write a legible hand, and cipher as far as the rule of 3. The term was 6 years and 9 pounds was the cost? Since it says “and his assigns” perhaps Roney was the captain of the ship that he came over on. It was not uncommon to indenture to the captain for passage. The entry above Adair says the person came from Ireland so I assume Adair did as well.
It appeared on page 17 of the proceedings of the Pennsylvania German Society. The library number was 974.806 P14p v16.
