James Adair (1709), author The History of the American Indians (pub. 1775) came to S.C. cir. 1735, lived among 5 different Nations, and had at least 5 indian wives and numerous children. A James and/or a John were two of his sons. The Adairs left S.C. and settled in Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama and Texas, many choosing to become know as whites, denying their indian heritage to escape predjudice. At that time it was better to be black than indian. Supposedly one of his sons GaHoGa Foster (Cherokee)as his first wife, and a Jean or Jennie Kilgore (white) as his second wife. We are now researching KILGORE (Cherokee)as this is a given name of many Cherokees and other tribes at the time in the area that James traded. These records are even fewer than the white records.
