A reproduction of pages from the James Hamilton Adair II family bible shows the name, JOEBILLY, for the boy born 14 Aug 1863.However, there is no evidence that he ever used the name Joe during his adult life as available official and public documents bearing his name (including his marrage liscense) reflect only William Adair.Evidently he decided to acknowledge the name Joe in the final years of his life, as his tombstone, which he personally ordered and purchased in 1946, show his name as J. William Adair.
William was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky. As a 16 year old youth, he walked barefoot behind his parents covered wagon to Charleston, Coles County, Illinois, in 1879, where he remained for the rest of his life. While he became a successful and innovative farmer, his avocation was the breeding and showing of draft horses at summertime County Fairs in Eastern and Central Illinois. In this endeavor, he had the willing and able assistance of his son Ralph. The quality of the horses produced by this hobby is evidenced by the fact one of their horses was purchased by the Anheuser Busch Brewery St. Louis, Missouri, who still feature brewery wagon teams in some of their commercial advertizing activities.
