I am trying to connect my Adair family in Ontario with the Adairs in United States. Recently I came across the following quote in a book entitled Pioneer History of South Brant and the Adjacent Townships: "The name Adair is one of comparatively few surnames that have been enshrined by Robert Burns in Scottish song. Robert Adair is known and loved wherever Scotsmen are found. Among prominent people who have borne this name is the name James Adair, who in the year 1775, published the History of the American Indian. John Adair, son of the above, in 1793 was appointed Lieutenant Colonel iin the USA and in 1805 was elevated to the Senate. David Adair was the first of this family to come to Canada. He must have been a loyalist, as he was granted land near Beamsville, some of which remained in the family for over a century. John, son of David and Abigail, like his father, served as Clerk of Clinton Township Council. He served with the 4th Lincoln Reg. in the was of 1812. He was a casualty in the early stages." The David and John mentioned in the last paragraph are my husband's direct ancestors. Can anyone help me connect with the James and John mentioned in the first paragraph. Would the John (who was a Lieut. Col and later a Senator) be a brother of David? If so, that would make the (author) James the father of both. Who was James' wife? parents? etc. Any information will be gratefully received.
