Land transfer in America has gone through five phases. 1. In the beginning land was claimed by British Crown. The Crown made grants to Colonies. Grants made between 1606 (VA) and 1732 (GA). 2. Colonies transfered land to individual colonist or settlers. This lasted through the colonial period from 1607 until Rev. War. 3. The US became a sovereign power after becoming independance. It involved the transfer of land from various foreign powers & from individual colonies (now states) to the federal goverment. It began in 1780 when NY & CT ceded certain lands they claimed to the federal goverment amnd ended in 1876 with purchase of Alaska from Russia.
