WILLIAM ADAIR of Kinhilt, bc1566 Source: David Murray Rose, Scottish Historian.
(my notes are in brackets)
WILLIAM ADAIR of Kinhilt was commendator of Soulseat(c.1600) (bro. of Rev. Archibald Adair of Raphoe?) He was served heir to his father, Ninian, on 5th April 1608 (yes)in the 5 pound lands of Kinhilt, the 10 pounds lands of Portray ( Portrie ) with the Castle of Dunsky, in the parish of Inch, and the 4 merk land of Stranraer. (James Adair the 2nd son had Corgie). (Wigtoun Retours of Services of heirs).
He purchased the Ballymena estate in Antrim, Ireland from Sir Faithful Fortescue, and at his death, which occurred on 4th November 1626 (yes) his Ballymena property consisted of 40 messuages. While he made these extensive additions to his property in Ireland he resigned various lands, in the barony of Kinhilt, which were granted to Sir Hugh Montgomery of Newton (& Portmontgomery / Portpatrick & Ayr & co. Down)(Lord Montgomery of the Ards). (Believe William Adair's brother Gilbert may have been a kind of "knight" of Hugh Montgomery, the same as R. Houston / Howstowne).
WILLIAM ADAIR of KINHILT bc 1566 (elder bro. of Rev. Archibald Adair who m.1614 Miss HOUSTON ?) (Wm. dc.1624 when Sir Robert was made heir to his father William & grandfather Ninian ? )was thrice married ; his 1st wife was Rosina MacCLELLAN of Galston,(Carrick or Ayr ?) (was this the same Galston of Cunninghams mentioned by, I think, the Strange / Le Estrange family of Ireland ?) whose contract is dated 18th April 1580.............??
The 2nd wife is said to have been a daughter of HOUSTOUN of Castle Stewart (Ravinstoun, Whithorn, Wigtownshire whose mother may have been an Agnew or Vans Agnew or Stewart ?) who died without issue,
while the 3rd was Helen CATHCART (wasn't there a William Adair & wife Cathcart in the Privy Council files after the William had died ?Think that the William m. Miss Cathcart may have been a descendant of the James of Corgie lineage.James of Corgie was the 2nd son of Ninian, and elder bro. of Rev. Archibald Adair of Raphoe. Seems probable, but unlikely that there were 2 Williams about the same time who m. 2 Cathcarts.)
He had – 1. Robert ADAIR, his heir, only son of 1st marriage. -- No sons by marriage to Miss Houston. 2. Rev. William ADAIR of Ayr, only son of 3rd marriage. He was ordained 24th October 1639 and was translated to the first charge in 1646. He had opposed the royal forces at Mauchline Muir in 1648. On 23rd June 1657 (he died and his son ?) he was served heir of Provision of William of Kinhilt (Ayr ?) (I cannot understand that statement as Sir Robert was the heir of Kinhilt), his father (Inquis : Generales, 4242).......??
In 1662 he was called before the Lord Chancellor with some of his colleagues for not signing the explanation of the Oath of Allegiance. As he did not conform sentence of deposition was passed upon him on 11 December 1682. (Wodrow MSS ?) (William Adair of Ayr file is in the Scottish Archives, but I have not seen it, nor the book on the Old Church of Ayr).
He married Janet KENNEDY, widow of Rev. Robert CUNNINGHAM of Holywood (check Scottish Archives & Fasti for wives of this Robert Cunningham ?), and had ..... 1. (Rev.)William Adair II of Ayr & Prestmonkshaws (Prestwick-shaw ? Carrick ?) ; 2. Patrick Adair minister of Belfast (& Carrickfergus) (the “famous Presbyterian” (don't think so)who married his cousin Jean,(no, Isabella) daughter of Sir (no) Robert Adair (a different Robert) & Isabella Forbes. (had son Dr. John Adair c. 1794) and 3. "Archibald" ????........ (Scott’s Fasti Ecclesiae Scotican II. pt. 7 88, 91).
I feel rather silly putting this on the Forum as you and David Murray Rose are the expert historians and I am probably wrong. You can mark me with a zero.
