Rathfriland, a town (c.1836) part in parish of Drumballyroney, but chiefly in that of Drumgath, bar. of Upper Iveagh, co. Down, Northern Ireland, 16-1/2miles west from Downpatrick. The town was founded soon after the restoration by Alderman Hawkins of London whom, at his own cost, provided food, clothing, and lodging for 5,000 who, during the calamitous progress of the parliamentary (Cromwell's) war, had fled to London for protection. He had also collected in England for the purchase of corn, wearing apparel and other necessaries for the support of such as had not been able to effect their escape. About this time, William Adair, son of Sir Robert Adair, married 31 May 1659 at Saint Clement Danes, Westminster, London, England to (Anne / Anna Helena Scott).
