DeMussenden Leathes family papers (Ipswich HA403:T1039) Large collection of family letters sent to William Leathes who was Paymaster General under Queen Anne.He was born in co. Antrim, N. Ireland in 1674 and died 1727 in Hertfordshire.In 1727 is nephew, Carteret Mussenden (refer Carteret of America) assumed the surname of Leathes and was elected MP for Sudbury and in 1772 inherited an estate from Hill Mussenden and assumed the additional surname.
The letters are from various family members and include those sent to William by his brother, Rev. John Leathes of Hillsborough (Ireland ).Rev. John Leathes who died in 1730 was the incumbent of TAMLAGHTARDalias MAGILLIGAN, county Londonderry (HA403 : T1039/6).
Among his letters are 2 rentals dated 1720 for “Aghenlock and Caberagh in barony of Lower Eveagh” county Down, N. Ireland, an estate which had been owned by a sister, Jane Mussenden.A number of the letters concern the value of property in Ireland. A copy of John Leathes’ will dated 30 Aug 1730 is included in this volume.
