John, some descendants still today think our James Adair was the son of Joseph Adair, Sr. who married Sarah Lafferty, but after Mildred Brownlee's research on the Early Adairs of Lrs. County, S.C. I personally don't think so because they base it on research done by others in the 1920s & 1930s. I believe James Adair was the son of James Adair, Sr. "Cooper" who was married to Ellender/Eleanor. Mildred seemed to base her material on the Lrs. County, S.C. records. What I've seen of the records confirms what she wrote. There are records which (I believe) refer toas "son of James." There were 3 men named James Adair in the early records there. James Adair was too young at the time to have a son named James. When he married Rebecca Montgomery he did have a son named James born much much later. James Adair, Sr. was the only man old enought at that time to have a son named James so he was referred to in the records as "son of James" or James Adair, Jr. The records speak for themselves. Also the naming practice suggests that James'daughter named Eleanor was probably named after her grandmother. The names James & Hannah were also names used in suceeding generations.
