On 20 May 1617 Uthred Macdowgall (Edward McDowell) of *Ballimaconnell (and Logan, Scotland ?)was granted Irish denization. On the same day, 20 May 1617 John Blair of Carrickballidone was also granted Irish denization. Perhaps he was related to the Blair family of Port Montgomery / Portpatrick, Wigtownshire, Scotland. Blair may have been the minister of Portmontgomery / Portpatrick / Saulset.
There may have been more relatives of McDowell from Wigtownshire who were granted Irish denization about this time, amongst the neighbours and tenants of Hugh Montgomery (of Braidstone, Carrick/Ayr and of Dunskey Castle, Portmontgomery / Portpatrick, Wigtownshire, Scotland - Parish of Stoneykirk or Parish of Portpatrick).
To me, it appears that McDowell of Garthland may have been Hugh Montgomery's right-hand man, or squire in the "Plantation" of County Down, N. Ireland.
In 1659 James McDowel (of Logan ?) held land in *Ballymaconnell, Parish of Bangor, co. Down, N. Ireland.
