Thanks for your reply. As I noted in my two messages, my problem is determining who is the mother of Mary Ann Lee, b. Jan 1860, Marion Co.
In the 1880 Census for Marion Co., Hampton Twp., Dwelling #50, Mariah L. Lee, age 65 KY KY KY [i.e, born 1815], is shown in the household of Wiley Scott McFarland and his wife Mary Ann Lee and is shown as "mother-in-law" [relationship to Wiley Scott McFarland, head of the household].
From family records, I know that the father of Mary Ann Lee, b. 1860, was the daughter of Samuel Lee and Mariah L. Lee. Apparently, one of the following happened:
(1) Samuel Lee md. Mariah Louisa Adams, b. 1833 KY [daughter of George Adams and Mariah Louisa Lynn Adams] in 1858 and had daughter Mary Ann Lee, b. Jan. 1860. Presumably, if this is the case, Mariah L. born 1833, mother of Mary Ann Lee, died shortly after the birth of Mary Ann Lee. Samuel Lee was then the head of the household that [in the 1860 Census] included him, his mother-in-law Mariah L. Lynn Adams, several Adams children, and his young daughter Mary Ann Lee, age 6 months. The 1880 Census simply lists all of the ones below Samuel by their first names, no Adams is put after Mariah L. or the Adams children. In this case, Samuel Lee apparently later married his mother-in-law, widow of George Adams, who was only about 7 years older than he.
2. The second possibility is that Samuel Lee married in 1858 the widow of George Adams, Mariah Louisa Lynn Adams, and they had a daughter Mary Ann Lee, b. 1860. The younger Mariah, b. 1833, then is simply Mary Ann Lee's half-sister.
Ms. Loviska's book indicates that Samuel Lee md. Mariah Louisa Adams, b. 1833, and that Mariah died Sept, 1860. Prior to learning the information in Ms. Loviska's book, I had assumed that #2 was actually what happened. Now, I am uncertain!
I need to know if the 1858 marriage record makes it clear whether Samuel Lee married Mariah Louisa Adams, b. KY 1833 or her mother Mariah Louisa Lynn Adams, b. KY 1815, her mother. Ms. Loviska says he md. the former, but the 1880 census supports the contention that he married the latter. Maybe he married both!
Anyway, I need to know if there is some record that clarifies this.
I have ordered a copy of Ms. Loviska's book and also have posed the above problem to her since posting my two previous messages. Her book is available for $35.00 plus $3.00 book rate postage or $6.00 priority mail in the USA. Her address is: Ms. Leona Adams Loviska, 250 South Rose Drive #8, Placentia, CA 92870-1008.
