I haven't got all the John Adamses of this world straight yet but would note that many amateur genealogists esp. in the last century tended to link immigrants together (after all the name's the same, isn't it?), normally resulting in an unholy jumble. I have usually heard the "6 brothers" story as the "3 brothers" story, insert family name here. It's a typical "family legend" arising from oral transmission and/or speculation by some utterly unqualified person whose character or judgment (often in other matteres entirely) somebody trusted. For example, the great genealogist Donald Lines Jacobus (I believe in "Genealogical Research Methods and Sources," known in the field as "GERMS") told a very funny story about how, by the power of oral transmission, in 25 years or less anyone anywhere named Adams could indeed be descended from the Presidents! If I run across the "Fortune" man will send him along. Best luck!
