Mary L. Adams was the wife of Edwin L. Carpenter. She was the daughter of John and Lucy (Newbury) Adams, natives of New York, who later moved to Buena Vista township.Mary's paternal grandfather, was born in England and emigrated to America when a young man, locating on a farm in Erie County, NY where he married a German lady.In connection with his agriculaturl pursuits, he engaged in the manufacture of maple sugar. His wife died on the old homestead in NY; he also died in Erie County about 1851.Mary's father, John Adams was an only child. His education was limited as he started work early in life, first being employed in boating on the Erie Canal, and logging after his marriage. In the spring of 1849, with his family, took passage on a boat at Buffalo, NY bound for Milwaukee, WI.From there he made the journey to McHenry Co., Illinois with a wagon, where for eight years he worked a farm on shares. In the fall of 1857 he moved by team to Kenosha, Co., WI where he rented a farm for three years before coming to Portage County. He purchased eighty acres of government land in Section 14, Buena Vista township and built a shanty 16x12 feet.He cleared the land and later died there in 1864.His widow later married Nathan Carpenter, (Mary's father-in-law) and she died in 1880.
I hope some of this information helps you.My father (who is 96) remembers Edwin L. Carpenter and Mary(his grandparents.)I have been to Buena Vista (Liberty Corners) and seen the graves. What I cannot find are any pictures of this family.Do you, by change, have any?
