John Adams with wife Katherine was a headright of George Brent in 1677. This was supposed to mean that Brent paid Adams' passage from England. However, the Brent family had extensive holdings and a long history in Maryland, and several of the other headright names on his various lists were for his own relatives out of Maryland. It is my suspicion that John Adams the carpenter is, in fact, related in some way to the Francis Adams family of Maryland who later became neighbors to the Adams in Fairfax Co. Based on the existence of a Nipper Adams in this location and mentioned in the estate administration of John Adams Jr, it is likely that Katherine (surely born well before 1700)was a daughter or grand-daughter of John or George Nipper, neighbors at Cone Mill Creek who witnessed land transactions between John Adams and Thomas Norman. The Nipper family appears to have migrated, but the Norman family remained neighbors to the Adams family in this location for many years. John Adams the carpenter of Northumberland Co with wife Katherine can be shown by fairly substantive circumstantial evidence to have been the father of John Adams Jr with wife Elizabeth. [I have a reading of a will showing that Elizabeth Johns the daughter of Richard Johns of King William Co married a man named James Adams]. I have thus far found no credible documentation of Elizabeth's last name, although the land transactions with the Norman family suggest the possibility that she is a Norman. Aside from proximity and dates, I have found little to connect Gabriel Adams with this family. However, there are sufficient records to suggest this as a strong probability. John Adams Jr can be shown by later records likely to have been the father of William Adams and George Adams. It is possible (by location) that he was the brother to Richard Adams Sr, who is tithed with John's neighbor Maj John Champe @ Dettingen Parish in 1747. I would appreciate hearing how you are connected to this line. Any documentation I can share am happy to do so.
