The Naperville Sun recently published an interesting article on an unmarked cemetery in North Aurora, IL. discovered by a land developer. Upon studying an old atlas and other records, one individual in a metal coffin was determined to be that of a Civil War Vet Clark Smith. He was a Union corporal in Co H, 52nd Volunteer Infantry andserved at Shiloh, in the battle of Corinth, and other battles in the South. Clark farmed this area after the war.
Descendants were traced to a Nancy Kinney Adams and Donna Kinney Miles who lived in the area up until 1996. That's where the trail ends.
Presently, Smith's coffin is in a cooler system at the Kane County Coroner's office until the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency decides on the next step. Hopefully, Clark Smith will be reburied with full military honors, so it's important that relatives are contacted.
If Nancy, Donna, or other relatives out there are reading this, please contact Linda Eder of the Kane County Genealogical Society at 847-695-5893, or Karl Stampfl, Sun Times News Group, at 630-416-5212 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
