See the WorldConnect submission re Clara Gassin, b Dec 1879.She appears in the 1880 census of Brown Co KS, daughter of James H. Gassin, b ca 1839 in New York.He appears as Jas. H. Gassin, age 21, b NY, occupation carver, on page 317 of the 1860 federal census, New York City, 5th District, 21st Ward, with wife Eugenia, age 19, b NY.Only other person in household is John R. Nivens?, age 16, b NY, apprentice piano maker.James and Eugenia are two households removed from the household of Joseph Gassin.
JOSEPH GASSIN 50 NY piano maker
(All members of family were listed as b NY.)
Josephine 23 milliner
Sarah L. 19 domestic
Joseph R. 17 clerk
Charles 16 clerk
(Have not been able to locate Joseph in the 1850 census, which presumably would show James H. in his household.)
Brown Co KS will testators index shows "Gassin, Joseph,New York City NY, KS-7-C-552".This suggests to me that Joseph (Sr.) left a will in NYC and that a copy was put on file in Brown Co KS because some of his children lived there.
See the web site at
which shows a photo of an ornate piano worked on by Joseph Gassin around 1853.

Regarding Walker V. Adams, censuses show him as Walter.

Longview WA Public Library should have cemetery info (years of birth and death from grave markers) on Samuel and Mary C. Adams. They are listed at
http://rootsweb.com/~walcolgs/cem1a.htmhttp://rootsweb.com/~walcolgs/cem1a.htm .(Records of Lower Columbia Genealogical Society)
Samuel Adams' wife Mary Calpurnia Medley (b Jan 1839 MO) is quite POSSIBLY the girl listed as "Caliofona" in this household:
1850 CENSUS, WASHINGTON CO, OREGON TERRITORY
JOHN H. MEDLEY 41 VA farmer
Mary H. 30 VA
Adela 13 MO
Caliofona 11 MO (female)
Oscar 9 MO
John R. 6 MO (There was a John Medley in Cowlitz Co of corresponding age and birthplace.Name also listed in Cowlitz Co cemetery listings.)
Isaiah 3 MO
Caroline 1 MO
Jas. W. 20 MO sadler
John MALONE 19 MO laborer
(See the WorldConnect submission on John H. and Mary Helen (Venable) Medley.Their daughter "Caliofona"'s name has been transcribed there as "California" Medley.)
John H. Medley appears in the 1840 census of Randolph Co MO, and it may have been there that Mary Calpurnia Medley was born in 1839.(John is listed as "Jehue" in Ancestry.com's 1840 index. He is age 30-40, with 2 females under 5 years of age and one female 20-30.)
In 1860 JOHN H. MEDLEY and family show up in the Fifth District of Umpqua County, Oregon, post office of Locust Grove. Also in the Fifth District then were:
WILLIAM ADAMS 27 and Mary C. 21.I believe these two are Samuel and Mary Calpurnia (Medley) Adams, with Samuel entered incorrectly as William, or possibly his middle name was used, as sometimes happened. Also I believe their birthplaces were entered on the wrong lines."Indiana" is on the line above William's, "Missouri" is on the line above Mary's, and Mary's birthplace is blank.
Umpqua County was absorbed by Douglas County in 1863.
See the Adams entries (also Sarah [Adams] Rulifson family) in the Rose Valley Cemetery listings at
This cemetery is very close to Carrolls.Note the John Walker Adams listed, b 1833.There seems to be no connection between Samuel and John.During the Civil War this John Adams was a sergeant in Co D, 50th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, according to his tombstone.Military records list him as Sgt. John D. Adams from Payson, Adams Co IL, where one John Adams, age 27, born IL, appears in the 1860 census.Appears at Toutle, Cowlitz Co WA, in 1890 veterans census.John D. Adams filed for a pension 17 Apr 1885, place not stated.Widow Mary J. filed from Washington State in 1899.Minor dependent child (handicapped) Mattie K. filed 1918(?).
1850 CENSUS, JENNINGS COUNTY, INDIANA

THOMAS ADAMS 60 TN farmer

William 26 IN (Says "IA", which then was abbreviation for Indiana.)
John 18 IN farmer
Samuel 16 IN farmer
Willis 14 IN
Sylvester 11 IN
(On same page are households of James Adams 35 IA and Thomas Adams 24 IA.)
There was also a 16 year old Samuel Adams in Brown Co IN in 1860 (son of Thomas M. and Elizabeth R. A. Adams, both b TN).But I suspect the Samuel of Jennings Co IN is the man who went to Carrolls, even though his mother is listed in 1850 as born in KY.
One John D. Adams, J.P., married Wesley Choat and Mrs. Nora Stone, both of Carrollton, in 1894.Witnesses were F. L. Barber and Sadie I. Gassin.
John D.'s surviving family was in Owl Creek Precinct in 1900.Notice the children's father (i.e., John D., was listed as born in TN.Other censuses show John born in Tennessee and his father in Scotland.
MARY J. ADAMS, head, Jan 1833, TN NC TN
Katie, daughter, May 1863, TN TN TN (Age 27, so year should be 1873, as shown in Rose Valley cem recd.)
William H., son, Sep 1876 IL TN TN
Lee, son, Jun 1880, IL TN TN
Note the mention of Jennings Co IN (see 1850 Jennings census above, with 16-yr-old Samuel) in the WorldConnect submission re George Washington Adams (b 1817 Mercer Co KY, d Roseburg Co OR).George was married in Jennings Co in 1843, and reportedly had a daughter born in 1865 in Oakland, Douglas Co OR, where Samuel's daughter Sarah was born in 1863.Their being at Oakland around the same time seems to be only coincidental. There is no apparent genealogical connection between George and Samuel, as both the 1880 and 1900 censuses record George's father's birthplace as Ireland, and Samuel's father is listed as having been born in TN.In 1880 George's mother's birthplace was entered as PA and in 1900 as Germany.
I'm not related to this Adams family, and have no further information on them.
