Yes, 1846 is rather early for Texas (statehood 1845). The first colonies here from the US were established in 1821 and my Harbour ggg grandfather (VA-KY-AR-MX [Mexico 1682-1836]) came here in 1823. My Willingham gg grandfather (GA-RTX) came here in 1839 (Republic of Texas 1836-1845).
After statehood in 1845 there was a rather large migration to TX from the rest of the US. The first US Texas census was in 1850, so I’m delighted with this 1846 tax record for Spencer J. Adams.
