Thank you for posting this information about John. It was very helpful to me. Up until now I had thought Hannah's father was Jacob Adams 1733.
The information from the book indicates that John lived with his daughter Catherine right before he died in 1801. That isn't borne out by the census:
1800 census Lincoln Co NC p878 Catherine McCormack 1 M <10, 1 M 10-16, 2 M 16-26, 1 F <10, 2 F 16-26, 1 F 45+
As you see, there is no elderly male living with her. So either John died before 1800, or he didn't move in with Catherine until after 1800 if at all.
There is a John Adams in Lincoln Co:
p836 Jno Adams 1 M 10-16, 2 M 16-26, 1 M 45+, 1 F 16-26, 1 F 45+
Those children are probably too young for my John.
Also in Lincoln Co are Abednigo Adams and Reubin Adams, and a William Groves who conceivably could be the man who married John's daughter Mary.
There are several Adams families in Rowan Co in 1800:
1800 census Rowan Co NC p315 Jacob Adams 1 M 10-16, 1 M 26-45, 1 F 26-45 p438 Jacob Adams 3 M <10, 1 M 26-45, 2 F <10, 1 F 26-45 p284 John Adams 1 M <10, 1 M 10-16, 1 M 45+, 1 F <10, 1 F 10-16, 1 F 16-26, 1 F 45+ p304 John Adams 4 M <10, 1 M 26-45, 1 F 10-16, 1 F 26-45 p404 John Adams Senr 1 M <10, 2 M 10-16, 1 M 45+, 1 F 26-45 p404 John Adams 1 M <10, 1 M 16-26, 1 F <10, 1 F 16-26
Others listed are Isaac, James, Jesse, and William.
John Adams Sr might be my John, but I wonder about those children listed with him. There are no Groves or McCormick families in Rowan Co.
The McCormick book also mentions a Richard Sherrill who knew Jacob Adams, youngest son of John. The Sherrill family heavily intermarried with my Lowrance family: Adam Sherrill married Elizabeth Lowrance; Agnes Sherrill married David Lowrance; Jacob Sherrill married Margaret Lowrance; William Sherrill married Susannah Lowrance; and Joseph Lowrance married an unknown Sherrill woman. These Lowrances are children of Alexander Lowrance, an uncle of Andrew Lowrance who married Hannah Adams.
Apparently the Adamses, Sherrills, and Lowrances lived next to each other in Rowan Co. The Lowrances came from Peapack NJ to Rowan Co NC in the 1750s. This seems to be quite a bit earlier than when John Adams is supposed to have moved to NC. I don't know if the families knew each other back in NJ, but the timing suggests otherwise.
