This brought back ole memories of our daddy Prince Adams raised in Pointe Coupee Parish and lived in Melville until his death in 1977.
I never kissed my daddy.Never hugged him.Never told him I loved him.
My earliest memories of my daddy.1957.Sitting on the front porch swing.Running around the yard then climbing the mulberry tree shaking out berries until dark then catching lightening bugs and telling scary stories about the "hook arm man".
We were waiting in the late evening for him to get home from work.Mama was singing, "I have heard of a land on the far away strand 'Tis a beautiful home of the soul.Built by Jesus on high, there we never shall die 'Tis a land where we never grow old."
My daddy worked building Pipelines from 7 A.M. to 7:30 P.M. so he got home around 9 P.M.Here came daddy's ole pickup truck around the corner.Four of us six kids ran for the truck. My oldest brother and sister were sitting on the porch courting.
He never ever hugged or kissed any of us.We knew he loved us cause he worked seven days a week, never spank us, made us attend school and church and spoke softly.
The years flew by until October 27, 1977.I was walking to Sunday School and had to pass by his house.About 1/2 mile away I could hear my Mama's loud screams.I started running as fast as when I chased my buddies to the ole swimming hole.
Daddy was laying on his back not breathing from a heart attack. We loaded him into a rescue unit, got in the back with him and none knowing much about CPR.While my oldest brother compressed his chest I breathed into his mouth. He has not shaved yet this Sunday morning and I could feel his whiskers against my chin.
The doctor pronounced him dead at the hospital emergency room.
