I put all this together from messages I found on the internet.
More about Nancy Adams family. She married Johnathan Hamilton
Meadville, Crawford County, Pa. He was the son of James Hamilton and Mary Agnes Logue.
I found this message on a board and I trust what she says because there was a written record for this information. There is also another false story about this family all over the internet. I will explain all of that too.
This is true: “Joseph Adams was born Sept. 13, 1705 in Pennsylvania, died 1801 Chester Co. Pennsylvania. According to the written history I have this Joseph married first Lydia Weldon who died in 1759. He then married a woman named Ann, have seen Allen & Morrow, was likely a widow, one could be her maiden name. According to the history I have the immigrant ancestor of this line was named William. He came to America at age 15 trained to be a bookbinder, the same as his father who remained in London. I have found a record of this William leaving London in 1665 on a ship named The Nicolas. William set up the first bookbindery in Philadelphia. He married a Swedish woman who is not named according to the history. Everybody I've heard from says Joseph's father was named William. I've never been certain if the William who came to America in 1665 was Joseph's father or grandfather. If he was his father he would have been 55 years old when Joseph was born. I've also been told a branch of the family hired a famous historian who raised the possible connection to another William whose father was a Richard born New Jersey. The researcher said there was no proof of that, & dismissed it. However, was told some started accepting this unproven connection & have spread it over the internet. My ancestor is Joseph's daughter Hannah who married James Gilliland. She was born about 1740 & moved to Westmoreland Co. after her husband's death in 1798. James Gilliland's mother was Margaret Francis Burr. The Burr family came from London with William Adams in 1665.
Note by Vicky: Joseph Adams was the father James Adams married to Isabella Weldon. Their son John Adams was the father of Nancy Adams married to Johnathan Hamilton, son of James Hamilton and Mary Agnes Logue, my ancestors, in Meadville, Pa.
The other story that is false is that the Adams family descended from a John Adams and Elizabeth Fenwick. According to this story they were the first to arrive. They had a daughter names Elizabeth Adams who married a mulatto free slave and they had a son named Benjamin Gould who started Gouldstown, New Jersey. James Adams born in 1770 son of James Adams born in 1734went with his brother and my ancestor John Adams to Venango County, Pa. James Adams 1770 had a daughter named Lydia. Lydia is my Nancy Adams cousin.
Lydia married Moses Corey, the father of W. E. Corey, prominent in the iron industry of Pittsburgh, and formerly president of the U. S. Steel Company. Mary, another daughter, married Heydrick, the father of Judge Heydrick, of Franklin, who sat for a time on the Pennsylvania supreme bench. Biographers for Willima Ellis Corey (President of US Steel) wanted to connect to this more distinguished line for his biography. They hired historian, Gilbert Cope, to do the research--but Cope was unwilling to make the connection. They used the information anyway, because the Fenwick’s descended from Royalty making the ancestry look better.
Like I said before there was much literary fraud back then.
I also found this message on the internet and I believe to be true.
Joseph Adams, was born in about 1705, and lived at West Fallowfield, Chester county, Pennsylvania. He left a will of record in Chester county in which he names all his children, having a large family. His eldest son was James. James Adams, son of Joseph, was born October 30, 1734, in Chester county, Pennsylvania. The record of his family bible is still in the hands of his descendants, giving the dates of the birth and death of a family of thirteen children. The names, residences and rank of Pennsylvania soldiers in the war of the American Revolution are preserved in the Second series of Pennsylvania Archives, vol. xiv, in which James Adams appears on pages 372, 389, 416 and 450 as captain of the Fourth Company of the Fifth Battalion of Cumberland county Associates, a volunteer military association, and in Colonial Records, vol. xi, page 90, Minutes of the Committee of Safety, the following is contained : "Captain Rickman was directed to pay Captain James Adams £112 5s, for expenses attending the march of his company from Cumberland county, to be charged to Congress."
Captain James Adams was born in Chester county, Pennsylvania, where he married and afterwards removed to Cumberland county, Pennsylvania. Several great-granddaughters of this James Adams have been admitted to membership in the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Five of his sons, William, Jonathan, James, John and Weldon Adams, coming from Chester county, crossed the Allegheny mountains in about 1800.
James Adams, son of the above named James Adams, was born October 30, 1770, in Chester county, Pennsylvania, and removed to what is now Venango county, Pennsylvania, in 1800. He purchased from an original settler the land on which the borough of Utica is now situated, built thereon a saw mill, flouring mill, woolen factory for carding wool for local spinners and weavers and dyeing and falling the product of domestic looms. He also built and operated a factory for wood working and an oil mill for extracting oil from flax seed ; and, together with his brother John, built and operated a saw mill about midway between Utica and Cochranton. In the early forties he sold his Utica estate, except the farming lands, and removed to Franklin, where he became a large real estate owner. He had a family of eleven children. One of his daughters, Lydia. married Moses Corey, the father of W. E. Corey, prominent in the iron industry of Pittsburgh, and formerly president of the U. S. Steel Company. Mary, another daughter, married Heydrick, the father of Judge Heydrick, of Franklin, who sat for a time on the Pennsylvania supreme bench.
We do know that John Adams stopped briefly in Butler County, PA before moving to Crawford County, PA. My Jonathan Adams stayed in Butler County, and there was another John Adams at an early date who had a land plot with Hugh Lee (also a relative) in Butler County. Finally, there was a John Adams who seemed to stay in Butler County (Marion Township)--who is said to have had 12 children! As to the parentage of his line--we can only be 100% certain up to Joseph. There are two schools of thought: 1. Joseph was the son of William. They were of Irish heritage. Near neighbors were Patrick, James, Robert and Hugh Adams. Since Hugh had a James Adams and Gilliland as executors of his will--this would suggest a connection. Hugh leaves his estate to family back in Ireland. I tend to think that this information is the most likely line. Patrick, Hugh, and Joseph had land that bordered each other.
