Laniel as far as I know is a French Quebec surname and not an American surname back in those times.
Issac is the son of Philip Adams b. 1759 of Halifax County NC and ??
As members of this family was known to have moved to Weakley County Tennessee
Just a thought: as Lanier is pronounced Lan-yeah
so it could easily morph to Lan-yell
