I am trying to trace Jonathan Ross, Jr., b. 1799; d. 1881 Sumter Co., GA. Lived Jefferson Co. 1810's to 1830's; Crawford Co. 1830's to 1860's. He married Janie Dawkins Tarver, daughter of Jacob Tarver and Dorothy Dawkins. Jonathan is said to have been the son of Jonathan, Sr., and the grandson of William Ross. He is also related somehow to Francis and Mary Ross of Greene Co. and Hancock Co. Jonathan and his sisters (Frances m. James Matthews; Nancy m. Elisha P. Turner; Elizabeth m. David T. Smith) received generous amounts of money "...as their distributive shares..." from the estates of Francis and Mary during the late 1810's and early 1820's in Hancock Co. However, they were not grandchildren as grandchildren were said to all be dead in 1861 (though the grandchildren left children) when last item of Francis's estate was being settled.
Other Ross's in the Burke, Jefferson, Hancock, Washington, Greene, Warren, Elbert, Richmond, Putnam, Jackson, Columbia, Franklin, Wilkes Counties area at the same time were George (R.S., b. NC, d. Jones Co., GA), Jesse (R.S., b. NC, was in Putnam - Monroe - Jones, Stewart Co., GA; d. Arkansas, I believe), James (said to be father of Francis, no source seen for proof), John (all over this area), William, David (son of James and stated to be only child of James)... earlier Ross's were Moses, Nathan, Isham, and Nathaniel (don't have a clue who they were). My great-grandmother wrote that our Ross's came from SC to GA to settle the Indian ceded lands and prior to that were from VA.
The above Ross's associated with each other at various times so they knew each other at a minimum (witnessed deeds together, attended the same estate sales, etc.), if not related. Descendant of George Ross above married descendant of Jonathan Ross, Jr. and a short family history states that they were third cousins (Cyrus William Ross m. Arminda Patience Ross).
Other families in the area that were closely associated with: Tarver, Byne, Dawkins, Hunt, Adams (James Ross m. Nancy Adams), Jordan, Smith, Matthews, Turner, Jackson... Jonathan Ross, Jr. is my ggg-grandfather and his father was said to have left his family shortly after their fourth child was born, never heard from again. Any help is much appreciated and I have tons of notes to share.
