Lois -- We corresponded both by e-mail and letter several years ago.You were kind enough to send me Joseph Harless' probate papers when I lived in Ohio. Now I am in California, but I am still researching Joseph and his wife Agnes Adkins.I am a descendant of their son Miles and you, as I recall, are a descendant of their son Aaron.
I was very interested in your posting that Joseph Adkins was Agnes' father.I have been trying to determine her parentage without much success.By a process of elimination, however, Joseph was my best pick. Can you tell me where you got this information?
Joseph is a candidate for several coincidental reasons.(1) He was in Montgomery (later Giles) County after Reuben, Agnes' brother, was born there and shortly before Agnes was born there -- he shows up in the Montgomery County Tax list of 1787.(2) He would have been 67 at the time Agnes was born which is getting pretty old, but his wife was much younger, and she would have been only 40 then.Ronnie Adkins thinks Henry was Reuben's father, but he doesn't know about Agnes because she is never mentioned in his book. While Henry would have been 60 when Agnes was born (not impossible), Henry's wife would have been 55 then (highly unlikely).(3)It looks like Joseph had died by 1797 because the surety for his daughter Nancy's marriage was an older brother Joshua. So this could explain why Agnes' older brother Reuben was her surety.(4)There is a Drake connection.Joseph Harless' probate papers which you sent to me show that Charles, Isaac, and Alfred Drake owed Joseph Harless money at the time he died.Isaac and Alfred are Charles' sons.I have found all 3 of these Drakes in Pike County KY at the same time Joseph and Agnes Harless lived there. In addition, an Isom Adkins owed Joseph Harless money.I have found an Isam Adkins married to Jane Drake, a sister of Charles.A brother to Charles and Jane Drake, James Drake, married Joseph Adkins' daughter Nancy.Further, Isam and Jane are listed in an Indenture to land adjoining the property of David Price, the father of Agnes Price who married Reuben Adkins.(5) Michael Harless, an uncle of Joseph Harless, married Jenny Adkins, a daughter of Parker V. Adkins.Parker V. was Joseph Adkins' older brother. So there was a connection between these 2 families even before Joseph Harless married Agnes Adkins.
Any other information you have to enhance or dispel my reasoning would be appreciated.I would love to solve this puzzle!
