Sheila, I too, have found the Giles County Virginia History "Books" on my Fry family leaving a lot to be further researched. Our family says that James Fry was the son of an Alex Fry who settled with the French Five Hundred in 1790 in Ohio. Lafayette Cole (my family) says in the Lambert Papers ( and this is after I heard about the Alex Fry) Quote: John H. Cole b.1837 d. 1864 (Killed)m. Martha Fry, b. Dec. 3, 1841d. 1921
She was dau. of James Fry from mouth of Walker's Cr. Near Giles C.H. His mother was Anna Johnson, grandmother of David E. Johnson & of Judge David Johnson of Giles Court House-Cousins to each other. He was supposed to be son of a French nobleman. Grandmother (my wife) told the Dau. his name.
As far as I am concerned the Fry History(Fry-Bunn) is screwed up also.
A Brief of Wills and Marriages in Montgomery and Fincastle Counties Virginia 1733-1831 page 17 : FRY,JOHN and Anne Johnston, widow. Milliton Adkins, surety- Nov. 8 1787
The Fry History page 5 says:
"In Montgomery County, 3 November-1787, GEORGE FRY married (2) Nancy Ann (Abbott) Johnston, daughter of Richard Abbott and widow of David Johnston" -Source -Giles County History
What GILES COUNTY HISTORY ACTUALLY SAYS IS: George Fry , Sr. or I, b. ca 1735 d. March 1793 m.(1)-------- (2)post 7-25-1786 Annie Abbott Johnston, widow of David Johnston, the settler.
My question is: Who is the John Fry who m.Anne Johnston, widow? Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks, Linda
