Since posting my query, I've found out that Sam was the son of William Adkins and Nancy Hamilton of Tennessee. Catherine 'Kate' Elswick (1838-1909) was the daughter of J. Elswick and Sarah Kinney, m. 12/31/1835 Pike County, who later remarried to Elisha Damron on 1/23/1845 in Pike. Kate is listed with her brother George W. in the 1850 Pike census in the household of Elisha & Sarah Damron. Kate m. Pike County 10/28/1855 Samuel Adkins, son of William Adkins and Nancy Hamilton. Kate had 2 children by Sam Adkins - Louisa & Nancy J., listed w/parents on the 1860 Pike census. Sam & Kate are not listed in the 1870 Pike census, but Kate appears in the 1880 Floyd census as a widow. A Sam Adkins married Hanna Greer in Pike, 1866, and they had a son Frank, b. 1872. I'm not sure if this is the same Sam Adkins. Kate later married Robert Frasure, and may have married Wilburn Caudill as well. Kate's son William Solomon Adkins, b. 12/25/1868 (according to death certificate, but the census shows him age 7 in 1880!), d. 5/25/1953. He m. first Rilda Akers, then Victoria Clark in Floyd, 1899. Wm. Solomon's dad was Sam Adkins according to the death certificate, but there's an old family rumour that William Solomon's real father was not Sam Adkins, but a "Mullins from Virginia," who was some kind of "travelling salesman," but was there such a thing in Appalachia just after the Civil War? It's a long shot - but can anyone connect a Mullins with Kate Elswick Adkins in Pike or Floyd counties between abt 1868 - 1872? This is just a guess: sinceWill Adkins' middle name was Solomon, could there be a connection with Solomon 'money-making Sol' Mullins or his nephew Andrew Jackson Mullins? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me directly if you have any info on this. Thanks!
