HI Ronnie, Glad to meet you! :-) Seems I stirred up a couple of folks here, including you. Didn't mean to start a firestorm. And I am sorry that you find it difficult to be civil to me. I am probably one of the nicest, sweetest, most caring folks that you will ever meet. Sincerely I mean that!!
I am a genealogist of long standing - 30+ years, and I have an INHERITED ILLNESS that just about killed me and for which I had received 17 different diagnoses before I found what this illness was. I was taking 21 different medications each day, several times a day. I think this illness may have come to me via my Jewish ancestry which I didn't know abt until DNA showed that and via several other families that I believe have Melungeon connections. I found the illness because I found out about the Melungeons. Glad to hear that your family does not seem to be ill.
I have been taking the proper medication for almost 5 years now and I LOVE HELPING OTHERS find out about the Melungeons so that they too may not have to suffer as I have suffered. And I mean that I would be DEAD now had I not found this out.
Let me state first off that I do NOT believe that every person with the surname Adkins is of Melungeon descent. Nor do I believe that every Adkins in an area where Melungeons were, were Melungeons. SOME Adkins were Melungeon descendants. I wrote the subject line w/ a bunch of ??? marks and I proposed a theory that the Adkins that I had found MIGHT be Melungeon descendants because they were in the right place at the right time. I grew up with a family of Adkins who I am sure were of Melungeon descent - didn't know it then - but several of the children were born w/ extra thumbs, a birth defect that some Melungeon families carry. These Adkins were blond/blue-eyed but with the most marvelous golden skin tones I have ever seen. They tanned beautifully without even trying while I burned at the slightest ray of sun!!
But first a question: You wrote:<> The only Edmond Osburn I have is: Descendants of Edmund Osburn
1 Edmund Osburn . +Sarah A. Walker . 2 Martha Osburn ..... +Paterick (Henry) Napier b: Abt. 1849 m: December 18, 1866 Father: Patrick Hughes Napier Mother: Perlina Watts
What are you talking about?
Second you noted: <> Thank You, now please tell me HOW they do this.
As I said these are all collateral lines for me and I have not been researching them so I appreciate any and all help that you can offer. But also, I THINK I said that I SUSPECTED Melungeon ancestry because they were in the right place at the right time. This was INDEED an OPINION of mine for which I was looking for proof. I thought that is what these genealogy boards were about. I offer a theory and you either support or not by offering some PROOF that my theory is right or incorrect. WHAT PROOF can you offer me that these folks were NOT Melungeon descendants?
<> Yes, and a LOT of Melungeons were waiting on the dock to greet them!! Along with a few Indians of course! :-)What did you want to prove by this statement? I think you have proven that a LOT of VA immigrants had the opportunity to find Melungeons and procreate.
<> Me too, Ronnie so I guess we agree here.
<> Now you have lost me! IF someone marries someone and they have children, then they are descended from the someones. And line of descent follows from BOTH parents. As far as I can see it DOES mean that they descend from a race/tribe etc, although Melungeons are neither a race nor a tribe.
And for the record no you didn't spell it right, it is MARTIANS :-)but that doesn't make 'no never mind' as I understood what you were saying and I can tell you that I certainly think some of my folks WERE!! They landed in a particular spot from NOWHERE with no parents and no place of birth.
I read all the listed posts here and found some agreeing with you and some with me. I think it would be beneficial to all of us to do a little more looking into these folks. Just because they came FROM England, doesn't mean that they always married English when they got here or Scots/Irish for that matter and the "Indian Grandmother Myth," in your family shows that there are questions there.
Melungeons are multi-racial/multi-ethnic people, not a myth, although their history lies in the realm of 'myth' with MANY theories none of which are proven yet, by the way but DNA is working toward that end.
As someone said, an Adkins DNA project would be a wonderful way to find out just WHO you really are. I highly recommend it. That is the way I found that my Ramey/Remy family line is actually Jewish and we are also in the middle of a GREEN family DNA study looking to see if my GREEN ancestor might be of Gypsy (ROMA) ancestry. There are suggestions he might have been English gypsy and his description from war records would fit in well.
Lastly, I didn't come here to insult anyone. I did come to gain some info on the 8 Adkins families that I listed and I had HOPED in the process, to help someone as I had been helped, find perhaps a cause for their 'fibromyalgia,' which was one of my MISDIAGNOSES, or some other illness that was a burden to them. IF I can be of help to anyone, please feel free to post directly to me from one of my urls noted below.
