<> Some of the early people who were called Melungeon SAID they were Portuguese. They were laughed at and told they couldn't possibly be Portuguese in the middle of the Appalachian Mts!!
But the term Melungeon, while there are many theories, still is an UNKNOWN. We don't know where it came from or what it actually meant originally. Many theories, no proofs.
Aside from that, the EARLY FOLKS, whoever they were, married into Native American peoples, blacks, although not likely slaves, but FREE People of Color, and European whites as they began to filter into the Appalachians, they married them. So no, Melungeons shouldn't be called Portuguese. And the term Melungeon again still not knowing what it originally meant was used as a 'dirty word,' very similar to the 'n'word. In recent years some of us have taken that word back and are using the term Melungeon to name our very strong, intelligent, courageous families as a term of PRIDE.
<> I do not research the Melungeons of Ohio, as I haven't found my people there, I can only refer you to the site I sent previously. But I imagine they resent/refuse to believe for the same reason that other folks resent/refuse to believe that they have Melungeon ancestry.
<> NEITHER DID MY FOLKS. Never heard the word until a few years ago.
<<. I just need verification of this new race to believe it exists. >> The Melungeons are NOT a race!! Never will be able to verify this. They are a group of people who are multi-ethnic and multi-cultural in nature. RACE is a political construct that was man-made in order to give one group of people power over another group. It has absolutely nothing to do w/ biology.
