The 1860 census for Wayne County, Virginia lists: Leander Gilkerson [Leanaer Gilkison]30, farmer; Hellen Gilkerson or Gilkison 25; Rodah Sansom [Radale Sansom], 19, servant; Hellena P. Sansom 3; Adalaid Sansom 1. The Adkins book states that Leander and Helena Adkins Gilkerson raised Helena Parazade Adkins, the daughter of Tillman Crockett Adkins and Surrilda Adkins. Helena Parazade Adkins was born in 1857 and thus would have been the same age as the Hellena P. Sansom listed in the 1860 census living with Leander and Helena Adkins Gilkerson. Possibly the listing of Helena Parazade’s last name as Sansom is an error. Or possibly she was in fact the daughter of Rhoda Sansom. The girl listed as Adalaid Sansom in the 1860 census does not appear in the 1870 census with Leander and Helen Gilkerson. Presumably, she was the daughter of Rodah Sansom [Rhoda Sansom] and was no longer living with the Gilkerson family. Helenia Adkins, aged 13, in the 1870 census with the Gilkersons presumably is Helena Parazade Adkins.
One Rhoda Sansom, born in 1841 in Virginia, was the daughter of Abraham or Abel Sansom and Juliantus or Julia Yantus White. She later married a man named Vance.
