You said- "This is quite a change from 100 years ago, isn't it?"--- not really! We had non-Indians claiming to be Cherokee on every one of our 37 rolls! In fact, if you really want "a wake-up call" to the lengths that people would go to in order to claim it- read the 1896 citizenship applications shown on 54 rolls of microfilm in the M1650 series!
My very wise uncle once said- "You know... if there were as many "full-blood Cherokees" alive as the people on Internet are now claiming as their ancestors, then how in Gods name did those 75 or 100 white men in the population that was left, manage to whip our ass?"
